Document K 2013: Manifestation of Glazing (FTN5)
Read our guidance on the manifestation of glazing according to Document K 2013
Published 16 April 2013
Critical locations of transparent glazing on the same level within a building where a person might reasonably have the impression that they are able to move from one part to the other without interruption will require permanent manifestation of the glass either etched or filmed in the form of broken or solid lines.
The manifestation should be of sufficient size to make it immediately obvious to persons naturally sighted and those with impaired vision and be positioned between 850mm and 1500mm above floor level.
Glazing well indicated by mullions, transoms, door frames or large door handles may not require further manifestation but the overriding consideration should be "is it safe".
Approved Document K 5.2 section 7.3 b (2013) gives examples of glazing in and around doors that do not warrant manifestation i.e. glazing less than 400mm between mullions or a single vision panel within a door with a substantial frame circumference. Diagram7.1 (FZD0522).
The use of permanent manifestation to make glazing apparent is documented in Approved Document K 5.2 Section 7.4 (2013) Diagram7.2 (FZD0521).
