Natural growth irregularities within trees can produce stunning decorative effects when the logs are sliced using a particular method. Burrs (known as burls in America) come from growths that form on trees caused by the loss of a branch or wound to the bark.
The term figured is the most commonly used to describe particularly interesting grain pattern but Fiddleback describes a more pronounced/regular pattern while curl is more open/less obvious.
